Temple of Athena

Athena Temple Ruins

The Temple of Athena, one of the oldest temples of the Ancient City of Phocaea and Ionian history, located in a place overlooking the bay and the city, was built on a rocky elevation on the peninsula.

The construction date of the statue is known as the 6th century and it was built to address Athena, the daughter of Zeus. This statue in the temple is made of wood. Kybele votive niches were found in this rocky area as a result of the excavations carried out in 1993, and it was explained as a region where Kybele, who was considered the goddess of Anatolia in previous periods, was also revered. As a result of archaeological excavations, column drums found around the temple and temple ornaments made of terracotta are among the historical artifacts found.

The Temple of Athena, which is one of the top places to visit in Foça, especially when considering the historical buildings, is also among the places that can be visited with a travel guide. Transportation from the city center to the Phokaia Ancient City is easily provided by minibuses.
